Today, the website of the State Intellectual Property Office released the statistical report (2021) of the world's five largest intellectual property offices. In 2021, the five offices filed a total of 2.9 million invention patent applications (a year-on-year increase of 3.7%). A total of 1.5 million invention patents were authorized by the five offices (a year-on-year increase of 10%).
In 2021, the China State Intellectual Property Office reviewed and concluded a total of 1.266 million invention patent applications. In 2021, China's invention patent applications reached 1.586 million, a year-on-year increase of 5.9%; the number of invention patent authorizations was 696,000, a year-on-year increase of 31.3%.
According to the official authorization rate calculation formula: authorization rate = number of authorizations in the year/number of approvals in the year, the invention authorization rate in 2021 = 69.6/126.6 = 54.98%.
In 2021, the number of utility model patent applications was 2.852 million, a year-on-year decrease of 2.5%; the number of design patent applications was 806,000, a year-on-year increase of 4.6%. The number of utility model patents granted was 3.12 million, a year-on-year increase of 31.2%; the number of design patents granted was 786,000, a year-on-year increase of 7.3%.
European Patent Office: Patent applications at the European Patent Office have resumed significant growth. Despite the increasing workload, the European Patent Office has achieved a steady improvement in timeliness, shortening the examination cycle to 23 months, while maintaining the search cycle below 5 months.
Japan Patent Office: The average total examination cycle and first pass cycle are 15.3 months and 10.1 months respectively.
Korean Intellectual Property Office: The average processing time for invention patents and utility model patents is 12.2 months.
China State Intellectual Property Office: In 2021, the average review cycle for invention patents will drop to 18.5 months, of which high-value invention patents will drop to 13.3 months.
U.S. Patent and Trademark Office: By 2021, the number of officially authorized U.S. patents by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has reached 11 million, which is an important milestone for American innovation and creativity.
