Main intellectual property statistics in 2022

1. Patent

In 2022, the number of authorized invention patents in my country will be 798,000, the number of authorized utility model patents will be 2.804 million, and the number of authorized design patents will be 721,000.

As of the end of 2022, the number of valid invention patents in my country was 4.212 million. Among them, the effective number of domestic (excluding Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan) invention patents is 3.280 million. The effective number of utility model patents is 10.835 million. The effective number of design patents is 2.832 million.

As of the end of 2022, the number of high-value invention patents per 10,000 people in my country (excluding Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan) is 9.4.

In 2022, our office will accept 74,000 PCT international patent applications. Among them, 69,000 were submitted by domestic applicants.

In 2022, Chinese applicants submitted a total of 1,286 international design applications1.

As of the end of December, there were 607 published international design applications designating China.

2. Trademark

In 2022, the number of trademark applications in my country was 7.516 million; the number of trademark registrations was 6.177 million.

As of the end of 2022, there were 42.672 million valid registered trademarks. In 2022, our office received 5,827 applications for Madrid trademark international registration from Chinese applicants.

3. Geographical indications and integrated circuit layout design

In 2022, my country approved the protection of 25 geographical indication products, approved the registration of 514 geographical indications as collective trademarks and certification marks, and approved the use of geographical indications by 6,373 market entities. As of the end of 2022, a total of 2,495 geographical indication products have been approved, a total of 7,076 geographical indications have been approved for registration as collective trademarks and certification marks, and 3,23,484 market entities have been approved to use special signs for geographical indications.

In 2022, there were 14,403 applications for registration of integrated circuit layout designs in my country; 9,106 certificates were issued.

Brief update on key intellectual property statistics in January 2023

1. Patent

In January 2023, the number of authorized invention patents in my country was 45,000, the number of authorized utility model patents was 233,000, and the number of authorized design patents was 58,000.

As of the end of January 2023, the number of valid invention patents in my country was 4.238 million. Among them, there are 3.307 million valid domestic invention patents (excluding Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan). The effective number of utility model patents is 10.946 million. The effective number of design patents is 2.846 million.

In January 2023, our office accepted 4,000 PCT international patent applications. Among them, 3,700 were submitted by domestic applicants.

In January 2023, there were 83 published international design applications designating China.

2. Trademark

In January 2023, the number of trademark applications in my country was 362,000; the number of trademark registrations was 379,000. As of January 2023, there were 42.981 million valid registered trademarks.

In January 2023, our office received 388 applications for Madrid trademark international registration from Chinese applicants.

3. Geographical indications and integrated circuit layout design

In January 2023, my country approved the protection of 2 geographical indication products, approved the registration of 21 geographical indications as collective trademarks and certification marks, and approved the use of geographical indications by 343 market entities. As of January 2023, a total of 2,497 geographical indication products have been approved, a total of 7,097 registrations of geographical indications as collective trademarks and certification marks have been approved, and 23,827 market entities have been approved to use special signs for geographical indications.
