The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) invites all member states and stakeholders to celebrate World Intellectual Property Day on April 26, 2023. The theme of World Intellectual Property Day 2023 is:
Women and Intellectual Property: Accelerating Innovation and Creation
With various celebrations taking place around the world, World Intellectual Property Day has become a truly global event. While awareness of IP is arguably greater than ever, there is still a need for continued awareness of the critical role that IP plays in driving innovation and creation, business growth and sustainable development across many sectors of society, including women knowledge and understanding. World IP Day is an important means of reaching these audiences and an important vehicle to showcase the opportunities and benefits that come from the effective use of IP in today’s fast-paced and digitally driven world.
Women make up nearly half (49.58%) of the global population. While women everywhere are shaping the world through their imagination and talent, they face multiple challenges and their innovation and creative potential remains largely untapped.
When it comes to women's use of intellectual property, despite progress, they remain severely underrepresented. As a result, the number of women benefiting from the intellectual property system is extremely low. At a time when building economic resilience is a top priority, it is more important than ever to integrate women into the intellectual property system to accelerate innovation creation and business growth. This makes sense from an economic perspective and is the right thing to do.
As World Intellectual Property Day approaches in 2023, let us work together to promote a more inclusive and diversified ecosystem, accelerate innovation, creation and business growth, and benefit everyone.
