China declares 18,000 5G standard Essential patents, ranking first in the world (Intellectual Property Report)

On June 6, the 3rd anniversary of the issuance of 5G commercial licenses in China, the Intellectual Property Development Research Center of the State Intellectual Property Office released a report in Beijing showing that the current global declaration of 5G standard essential patents totaled more than 210,000, involving nearly 47,000 patent families, of which China declared more than 18,000 patent families, accounting for nearly 40%, ranking first in the world. In terms of applicant ranking, Huawei declared more than 6,500 5G standard essential patent families, accounting for 14%, ranking first in the world. After decades of development of "1G blank, 2G follow, 3G breakthrough, 4G synchronization", China has made remarkable achievements in the 5G communication industry.

According to reports, due to the internationalization characteristics of the mobile communication industry, the competition for standard essential patents is an important content in the global competition of the mobile communication industry, and the current 5G communication standard R15, R16 and R17 standards have completed the "frozen version", and the corresponding standard essential patent layout has basically become a foregone conclusion. In this situation, the number of standard essential patent claims in China ranks among the top in the world will play an important role in forming a competitive advantage in the 5G era.

According to the report released this time, the current global declaration of 5G standard essential patents totaled 217,749, involving a total of 46,879 patent families, of which China declared 18,728, ranking first, accounting for 39.9%, and the United States declared 16,206, ranking second, accounting for 34.6%. Other top-ranked countries include South Korea (4,293 items, or 9.2 percent), Japan (3,736 items, or 8 percent) and Europe (1,833 items, or 3.9 percent). The total number of 5G standard essential patents in China and the United States accounted for 74.6%, and the total number of 5G standard essential patents declared by China, the United States, South Korea, Japan and Europe accounted for 95.5% of the global total.

The report shows that the United States, China and Europe are the most important target regions for the layout of global 5G standard essential patents, with the number of layouts successively: the United States 46,123, China 39,224 and Europe 30,704, accounting for 21.2%, 18% and 14.1%, respectively. This means that these three countries or regions are also the most important target markets for 5G standard essential patents.

According to statistics, among the global patent applicants for 5G standard essential patents, Huawei declared 6,583 patent families, ranking first, accounting for 14%. In terms of the number of patents of the same family in the United States, China and Europe, Huawei also ranked first, followed by Qualcomm, Samsung, LG and OPPO. It is worth mentioning that among the top 15 patent applicants in the world, except for the United States, Japan, Europe and South Korea, there are two each, and Chinese companies occupy seven seats.

In addition, the report also analyzes the technical directions involved in 5G standard essential patents. According to the 3GPP technical specification statistics involved in the 5G standard essential patent declaration, the six most important technical directions are wireless resource management (21,968 items, accounting for 46.9%), access technology (6,445 items, accounting for 13.7%), multi-carrier transmission (4,675 items, accounting for 10%), channel coding (4,037 items, etc.). (8.6%), core networks (3,805 items, 8.1%), and next-generation access networks (1,185 items, 2.5%). The total amount of 5G standard necessary patents in these six technical directions accounted for 89.8%. The report believes that as the underlying basic technology in the field of communication, wireless resource management is still the most important technical direction of 5G standard necessary patents.
