Apple has already paid 800 billion won as a patent license customer of LG Electronics

Although LG has exited the smartphone business, it has earned substantial licensing fees from Apple thanks to its portfolio of important patents. LG Electronics said in April that it had received a one-time patent licensing fee, but did not name the customer. The source said LG Electronics received 890 billion won, of which Apple paid more than 800 billion won (about 4.3 billion yuan), and TheElec could not confirm the identity of the company that paid the rest.
The sources said LG Electronics and Apple may have signed a long-term patent use agreement of up to 10 years, which is standard for large conglomerates. Relevant patents may also include many standard essential patents. The two companies have signed cross-licensing agreements for patents in the past, but that is no longer needed now that LG is out of the smartphone business.
LG's big profit in the latest deal comes from the fact that it no longer has to pay Apple back because it no longer makes smartphones. Nokia, which exited the handset business a few years ago, has a similar arrangement and lends out its patents.
LG, which holds a number of standard-essential patents, is likely to seek a deal with Samsung as well.
While LG may have exited the smartphone business, its other affiliates, such as LG Innotek and LG Display, will continue to supply camera modules and displays to the iPhone maker, respectively.
