The Madrid System: A Strong Safeguard for the Change of Ownership of Your International Trademark Registration

Nowadays, many small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have successfully expanded overseas and registered their international trademark worldwide. As your business evolves and ownership may change due to restructuring or partnerships, choosing the right system to efficiently transfer trademark rights becomes crucial in the following ways:

For change of ownership for an international trademark registration, the Madrid System administered by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) provides businesses with a convenient, efficient and secure solution.
Businesses can use "Change ownership" (under the tab "Manage your trademarks") available online under eMadrid platform to request a total (all goods and services in all designated members) or partial (for example, some goods and services in some designated members) change in ownership.
*Tip: You can request a total change in ownership of multiple international registrations if you want to transfer them all to the same new holder(transferee). For the partial change in ownership, you must submit one request per international registration. The new owner (in whole or in part) must be a national of, or have a business or a domicile in, a member of the Madrid System.
