Global innovators continue to optimize cross-border IP layouts

      How active is global intellectual property (IP) activity? What are the highlights of IP work in different technology fields? Bilingual Weekly will launch the "IP data" column, showing the power of IP behind numbers and charts.

      Our first issue focus on the 2024 global IP registries released by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The growth trend of use of WIPO's global IP system for patents, trademarks and designs are dynamically showcased, revealing that the  transnational IP layouts of global innovators are continuously optimized.

PCT
 

      In 2024, the total number of PCT filings reached 273,900, a 0.5% increase compared to 2023. 

      An increase of the total number of PCT filings in 2024 reflected the vitality of global innovation activities. Scientific and technological innovation remained the core of global competition. Especially, the steady increase in PCT filings by multinational enterprises in the digital communication sector indicated that these enterprises were ramping up R&D investments to maintain their technological leadership.  

 

Madrid System

      The total number of international trademark applications filed under WIPO's Madrid System returned to growth in 2024, totaling 65,000 applications, representing a 1.2% increase compared to 2023.

      After two consecutive years of decline, the total number of international trademark applications filed under WIPO's Madrid System returned to growth in 2024, showing a resurgence in the willingness of global brands for expansion. Several companies saw large growth in their Madrid applications between 2023 and 2024, with L'Oréal of France topping the list for the fourth consecutive year. This reflected the increasing recognition of brand value in the international market.

 

Hague System

      In 2024, WIPO's Hague System for the international protection of industrial designs saw application numbers reach an all-time high of 27,161 designs. This represents a 6.8% increase, continuing the System's growth for the fourth consecutive year.
