MyEPO now enables all users to obtain certified electronic EPO priority documents

Release Time:

2025-05-23

In line with the Strategic Plan 2028, the European Patent Office (EPO) continues its journey towards the full digitalisation of the patent granting process. Certified EPO priority documents can now be requested in electronic format by all users with access to MyEPO.

This new free-of-charge service follows the recommendation on a common practice regarding issuing and accepting certified electronic priority documents, as approved by the European Patent Organisation’s Administrative Council as part of the convergence of practice programme. The user friendliness and efficiency of the service have been optimised thanks to a successful pilot project launched earlier this year. A special thanks to all users who participated in the pilot!

A user-friendly and secure service

Once requested via MyEPO, the electronic priority documents will arrive in the user’s Mailbox composed of a substantive folder as well as the certification document in PDF.

The substantive folder contains:

  • A PDF file with the certified copy document including a facsimile signature, the description, claims, drawings if any, and abstract
  • If applicable, sequence listings in their original format

The certification PDF document contains:

  • The application number and date of filing
  • The embedded electronic seal with a timestamp ensuring authenticity, i.e. that the document was genuinely issued by the EPO. For validation purposes, details of the seal can be checked using standard electronic signature viewing tools
  • A cryptographic hash ensuring that the content of the priority patent application hasn’t been changed since it was issued by the EPO

A feature guide is also available in the MyEPO services area of the EPO website.

Dedicated technical specifications have been published in the Official Journal of January to support offices of second filing in validating the certified EPO electronic priority documents that they receive from applicants, together with the relevant Decision by the EPO President and explanatory Notice.

How certified electronic EPO priority documents complement WIPO DAS

The introduction of certified electronic EPO priority documents complements the World Intellectual Property Organization’s Digital Access Service (WIPO DAS). WIPO DAS allows participating patent offices to directly exchange priority documents. Certified EPO priority documents can, in contrast, be used by applicants when filing electronically with other patent office. This is especially useful where they cannot rely on WIPO DAS.
