Unitree Robotics faces its first-ever patent infringement suit as it starts IPO process

Context: Founded in 2016, Unitree Robotics manufactures humanoid robots and dexterous robotic arms, responsible for nearly 70% of global robotic dog sales and owning a market share of over 40%. The company, which announced on July 18, 2025 that it had begun preparations to go public, is valued at over 6 billion Chinese yuan (USD 838 million).
What’s new: Hangzhou-based Luweimei Daily Chemical Co., Ltd. (Luweimei), a household chemical producer and retailer with a total registered capital of 550,000 Chinese yuan (USD 76,000), has sued Unitree in the Hangzhou Intermediate People’s Court over the alleged infringement of a patent related to an electronic dog product.
Direct impact: The case marks the first time Unitree has ever been on the receiving end of a patent infringement suit. The defendant has already filed a request for invalidation against the patent-in-suit, likely given the potential risk it could pose for its IPO, which it plans to complete as early as this October.
Wider ramifications: Luweimei has no direct commercial rivalry with Unitree, despite some of its patents covering smart electronic products. According to Lusheng’s Terry Lu, the plaintiff may be attempting to leverage Unitree’s IPO to seek a substantial settlement. However, he notes, if its infringement complaint is not well established, Unitree has a strong chance of succeeding in both the dispute and its IPO process. “From an infringement standpoint, the plaintiff’s claims appear weak; the patent specifies that the robotic dog must have color-changeable bionic fur, which Unitree’s products do not feature,” he says.

The patent has been transferred multiple times, originally filed by Zhejiang Jianlin Electrical and Electronic Co., Ltd in 2016. While the specific product in question is not yet public, the target could be Unitee’s Go 1, which is pictured below:
