EPO’s 20th annual meeting on co-operation with member states in Split on 11-12 May 2026

The EPO held its 20th annual co-operation meeting with national patent offices on 11 and 12 May 2026 in Split, Croatia. The event focused on the future of innovation in Europe, bringing together over 80 participants, including 27 heads of office and key stakeholders, to discuss the key forces shaping innovation ecosystems and to define shared priorities for the European Patent Network (EPN).

Hosted by the State Intellectual Property Office of the Republic of Croatia, the meeting opened with remarks from the Croatian Minister of Economy Ante Šušnjar, followed by a keynote address by EPO President António Campinos.

In his opening remarks, President Campinos highlighted the importance of strengthening Europe’s innovation ecosystem through co-operation: “Progress is strongest when built together across Europe. That shared purpose brings us here as we mark 20 years of this annual meeting. But today is more than a milestone. It is a moment to look back with perspective and, ahead to the next 20 years, to the kind of network we must still become.”

Setting priorities for the years ahead

Discussions focused on the main drivers shaping innovation and helping to define future strategic priorities. Designed as a milestone towards the new Scenarios for the Future 2025–2045 initiative, the 2026 annual meeting brought member states together for a strategic discussion on how to make the network future-ready. Participants highlighted priorities such as advancing AI-enabled processes, investing in shared data infrastructures, strengthening capabilities across offices, and improving access to the patent system for SMEs, startups and first-time users.

The programme featured a series of interactive sessions organised around three core themes: the impact of AI on the patent system, the modernisation of the EPN’s patent granting processes, and the development of new services to support Europe’s wider innovation ecosystem. These sessions combined expert insights with contributions from across the network, enabling an open exchange of perspectives.

The meeting also highlighted co-operation in action, showcasing ongoing initiatives and practical examples of collaboration, including outreach to startups and young inventors, as well as capacity-building programmes across the network.

In his concluding remarks, the EPO Vice-President, Christoph Ernst, summarised key takeaways and reaffirmed a shared commitment to strengthening Europe’s innovation landscape through continued co-operation, with a view to building an even stronger European Patent Network over the next 20 years.
