Apple faces US$7 billion in damages in the UK due to patent infringement!

According to foreign media reports, Optis recently sued Apple for patent infringement in the British court. The total global patent fees they proposed reached US$7 billion, and the patents involved came from LG, Panasonic, Samsung and other companies. Apple's appeal in the UK was rejected.
The dispute between Apple and Optis began in 2019, when Optis sued Apple in the UK, accusing Apple products of infringing on two of its 4G technology patents. Both patents were ruled critical to 4G connectivity and were found to be used in Apple's iPhones.
In March 2022, the High Court in London ruled that two 4G patents owned by Optis were standard essential patents and Apple had infringed on them.
In May of this year, Apple appealed the ruling, arguing that the two patents were not standard essential patents and that Apple did not infringe on them. However, the company's appeal was rejected by the court.
On Tuesday local time, a British appeals court ruled that the High Court was correct in rejecting (Apple's) arguments for non-infringement" and concluded that the patents were necessary.
Previously, in August 2020, a federal jury in Texas issued a ruling requiring Apple to pay $506 million in patent royalties to Optis Wireless Technology. These patent royalties are also used by Apple in iPhone and other devices. related to 4G technology. But later in 2022, that amount was reduced to $300 million, which was ultimately put on hold when the court decided not to hold a third trial.
