European Patent Office receives record number of Chinese patent applications in 2022

The 2022 Patent Index Report released by the European Patent Office on the 28th showed that 19,041 patent applications were received from China in 2022, reaching a record high, a year-on-year increase of 15.1%, and the largest increase among the 20 major patent application countries and regions.
The report shows that the European Patent Office received a total of 193,460 patent applications from around the world in 2022, a year-on-year increase of 2.5%. The top five countries with the largest number of applications are the United States, Germany, Japan, China and France. The growth in the number of patent applications in 2022 is mainly driven by China, the United States and South Korea. Patent applications in the three countries increased by 15.1%, 2.9% and 10.0% respectively year-on-year.
Judging from the company rankings,Among all companies submitting patent applications to the European Patent Office in 2022, Huawei continues to rank first，with a total of 4,505 patent applications, a year-on-year increase of more than 27%. South Korea's LG, the United States' Qualcomm, and South Korea's Samsung rank second to fourth respectively. OPPO, ZTE, Tencent, BOE, vivo, Baidu, Xiaomi, and CATL are also among the top 50 in this ranking.
From the perspective of technology fields, the field in which the European Patent Office received the most patent applications in 2022 was digital communications, with a total of 16,705 applications, a year-on-year increase of 11.2%. Medical technology and computer technology ranked second and third with 15,683 items and 15,193 items respectively.
European Patent Office spokesperson Luis Berenguer Jimenez recently said in a written interview with a reporter from Xinhua News Agency that the number of patent applications from China has more than doubled in the past five years. Today, the number of patent applications from China accounts for nearly 10% of the total number of applications at the European Patent Office. China is not only strong in digital communications, computer technology and artificial intelligence, but is also increasingly active in fields such as biotechnology and medical technology.
Jimenez also said that China has attached great importance to intellectual property protection in recent years and regards it as a key factor in economic growth. The number of patent applications submitted by China to the European Patent Office has reached record highs, which is also of great significance to the world's intellectual property protection.
