Get authorization 10 months in advance! Priority review of Korean technology patent applications in this field

The semiconductor field is characterized by high barriers, high technology, and high costs. Whoever can apply for patents first will be better positioned to take the initiative in global technology competition.
Recently, the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) announced that starting from November 1 this year, it will implement a one-year priority examination system for patent applications in the field of semiconductor technology.
Through this system, Korean semiconductor-related companies, R&D institutions, universities, etc. are expected to complete patent review within 2.5 months, and patent review authorization is expected to be accelerated by about 10 months than before.
Currently, in the Korean semiconductor field, the requirements for priority examination of patent applications include:
01 The classification of semiconductor-related patents should be the main classification, such as semiconductor devices and manufacturing;
02 The applicant is an enterprise that produces semiconductor-related products, devices, etc. in South Korea or is preparing for production;
03 R&D institutions supported by national R&D projects;
04 Semiconductor-specific universities or graduate schools (including industry-university-research cooperation) stipulated in the "Law on Special Measures to Strengthen and Protect the Competitiveness of National Cutting-edge Strategic Industries".
It is reported that the relevant departments have also revised the notice and announcement on priority review applications for patents and utility models. In addition to priority review of cutting-edge technologies such as semiconductors, blockchain technology and enterprise applications considered to be "innovative trial product applications" are also designated as priority review object.
