What is a PCT International Application

A: An international PCT application is an application filed under the Patent Cooperation Treaty. The PATENT COOPERATION TREATY (PCT) is an international treaty for cooperation in the field of patents. The aim is to reduce duplication of effort by the applicant and various patent offices when the same invention is patented in multiple countries. China joined the PCT on January 1, 1994. At the same time, the State Intellectual Property Office of China, as the receiving office, the international search unit and the international preliminary examination unit, accepts PCT international applications submitted by Chinese citizens, residents and units. As of September 30, 2018, 152 countries have acceded to the Treaty.
