The US Patent Office recommends that applicants submit application documents in DOCX format in advance

On April 28, 2022, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) issued a notice. Since the USPTO will charge a surcharge for patent applications submitted in non-DOCX format starting from January 1, 2023, in order to allow applicants to adapt to submitting patent applications in DOCX format. From now until December 31, 2022, the USPTO provides applicants with a temporary option when submitting patent applications. In other words, during this period, applicants can submit a PDF document generated by the applicant themselves and also submit an application document in DOCX format. In order to avoid problems when applicants submit application documents in DOCX format after the surcharge takes effect, the USPTO recommends that applicants submit application documents in DOCX format in advance.
