Although Samsung has decided to withdraw from the LCD business, it still has many LCD patents in hand. According to The Elec, Samsung transferred its LCD-related patents in the United States and South Korea to CSOT in June and August this year. It is understood that Samsung has more than 500 LCD-related patents in the United States. With the completion of these transactions, Samsung has sold more than 2,000 LCD-related patents worldwide, marking the end of Samsung Display LCD business. .

CSOT acquired Samsung’s LCD production line in Suzhou in 2020. However, due to the lack of some LCD expertise, it is easily affected by patent litigation in the United States. The new transaction can effectively avoid such incidents. Industry insiders said that the growth of the display panel industry has slowed down in recent years, and having more patents in hand can use litigation as a strategy to thwart competitors.

TCL Chairman and CEO Li Dongsheng visited Samsung in South Korea in July this year to discuss purchase orders for LCD panels. Samsung is CSOT’s second largest customer after parent company TCL, with the two accounting for 50% and 25% respectively. of shipments. As Samsung withdraws from the LCD business and reduces LCD panel orders from BOE, perhaps Samsung will increase its LCD panel purchases from China Star Optoelectronics. In addition, Samsung also owns shares of China Star Optoelectronics. (Bay Area Intellectual Property Trends)
