In celebration of this year’s Philippine Women’s Month, the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) launched the “Juana Patent for Patents Program” and the “Juana Design Protection Incentive Program” to Encourage more female inventors and designers to participate in the country's innovation efforts.

IPOPHL Director Lowell. Rowel S. As a new project of IPOPHL based on another project for women, "Juana Make a Mark", the "Juana Design Protection Incentive Project" can apply for up to 50 patents and 150 patents. Part of the fees will be waived for 150 utility model applications and 150 industrial design applications.

By waiving certain application, disclosure and substantive examination fees, the new program can save a lot of money for female inventors, innovative small and medium-sized enterprises led by women, and start-ups. Specifically, applicants filing industrial design and utility model applications can save Php 2,700, while applicants filing patent applications can save Php 5,100.

At the same time, applications that meet the requirements of the "Juana Design Protection Incentive Project" can also be processed with priority through IPOPHL's fast track.

Lori Beth, head of IPOPHL's patent department. Speaking at the launch ceremony of the project, Lolibeth R. Medrano said: “This Juana project will enhance people’s gender tolerance and promote the country’s innovation process. In addition, Medrano also mentioned IPOPHL’s efforts to improve the Philippines’ ranking in the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) data report. The above report evaluates and ranks the proportion of female inventors in various countries who submit PCT applications through the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), the international patent protection system.

As the second-ranked country in the above-mentioned WIPO rankings, PCT applications submitted to IPOPHL by Filipino female inventors have accounted for 38% of all applications, which is higher than 22% in 2020.

Medrano added: “We hope women can continue to build on this momentum.”

In order to increase women's awareness of the above-mentioned new projects, IPOPHL also signed a memorandum of agreement with the Philippine Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) on March 30 to jointly promote the "Juana Design Protection Incentive Project."

When signing the above-mentioned memorandum of agreement, DTI head Ramon. Ramon M. Lopez mentioned how protecting high-value intellectual property assets will help small, medium and micro enterprises thrive.

Lopez said: “Projects with creative names like IPOPHL emphasize the important role that intellectual property can play as valuable assets and business tools for entrepreneurs. While protecting intellectual property, DTI is also working hard to create a A culture of innovation and creativity. We reiterate that we want more than just ordinary MSMEs. We want to be able to cultivate MSMEs that are smarter and have higher value."

In addition to assisting in the promotion of the Juana Design Protection Incentive Project, DTI will also provide support to individuals, small and medium-sized enterprises and start-ups involved in priority areas identified by the agency.

However, in order to benefit from the relevant projects, individuals, small and medium-sized enterprises and start-ups interested in participating must first pass a series of standards and requirements indicated on the official website of the "Juana Design Protection Incentive Project".
