Cultivating and strengthening patent-intensive industries is an important measure during the "14th Five-Year Plan" period to promote the integration of intellectual property rights into industrial innovation and development and promote high-quality economic development. A joint announcement by the State Intellectual Property Office and the National Bureau of Statistics shows that the added value of patent-intensive industries nationwide reached 12.13 trillion yuan in 2020, a year-on-year increase of 5.8% (without deducting price factors, the same below), which is higher than the gross domestic product (GDP) in the same period. ) current price growth rate is 3.1 percentage points.
The Strategic Planning Department commissioned a third-party organization to conduct further statistical analysis [1]. The data shows that in 2020, my country's patent-intensive industries will make more prominent contributions to improving economic benefits, promoting innovation, and stabilizing employment, and specifically present the following characteristics.
First, development is highly resilient and has a strong role in stimulating economic growth. Against the backdrop of the severe impact of the COVID-19 epidemic, the added value of my country's patent-intensive industries achieved rapid growth in 2020, an increase of 5.8% over the previous year, accounting for 11.97% of the gross domestic product (GDP), an increase of 5.8% over the previous year. An increase of 0.35 percentage points, the contribution rate to GDP growth reached 24.6%. Among them, the added value of patent-intensive industries such as the information and communication technology service industry, pharmaceutical and medical industry, R&D design and technical services industry increased by 15.7%, 10.1% and 5.9% respectively year-on-year, becoming an important industry that drives high-quality economic development. From an international comparison, the added value of patent-intensive industries in the European Union [2] accounted for 16.1% of GDP from 2014 to 2016. my country's patent-intensive industries still have considerable room for growth.
Second, the economic benefits are good, and the industrial profit rate has achieved rapid growth. In 2020, the cost profit margin of my country's patent-intensive industries [3] was 9.8%, an increase of 0.7 percentage points from the previous year and 2.8 percentage points higher than that of non-patent-intensive industries. The top three industries with cost and expense profit margins are the pharmaceutical and medical industry (22.0%), information and communication technology services (20.7%), and R&D, design and technical services (15.8%).
Third, the company has strong innovation capabilities and the proportion of new product sales revenue has further increased. Sales revenue from new products in patent-intensive industries accounted for 35.7% of operating income, an increase of 2.6 percentage points from the previous year and 17.1 percentage points higher than that of non-patent-intensive industries. The top three industries with new product sales revenue accounting for the proportion of operating revenue are: information and communication technology services (48.3%), information and communication technology manufacturing (42.4%), and R&D, design and technical services (39.2%).
Fourth, investment in innovation is high, with R&D funding and manpower investment continuing to increase. In 2020, the R&D investment intensity of my country's patent-intensive industries [4] reached 2.3%, an increase of 0.15 percentage points from the previous year, and 2.1 times that of non-patent-intensive industries. The R&D personnel investment intensity of patent-intensive industries [5] reached 928 people per 10,000 people, an increase of 65 people per 10,000 people compared with the previous year, and 1.7 times that of non-patent-intensive industries.
Fifth, employment has steadily increased, and labor productivity has steadily improved [6]. In 2020, the number of people employed in my country's patent-intensive industries was 46.766 million, an increase of 384,000 from the previous year, accounting for 6.2% of the total employment in society. Patent-intensive industries account for 6.2% of the total employment in society and create nearly 12.0% of the country's GDP. The labor productivity of patent-intensive industries reached 259,000 yuan/person, an increase of 4.9% over the previous year, which was 2.0 times that of non-patent-intensive industries.
Sixth, the average salary income is high, and the high income characteristics of employees are similar to those in Europe and the United States.
